Omega-3 Fatty Acids and it’s Benefits
Wild salmon oil contains healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, a form of polyunsaturated fats, which have health benefits for animals and humans. Omega 3 fatty acids from cold water fish, such as salmon, Pollock, and mackerel contain EPA Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), that are rarely present in plant based Omega 3 fatty acids, with the exception of seaweed. A third Omega 3 called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in flaxseed, some vegetable oils and dark green leafy vegetables, however, this form of Omega 3 takes several enzymatic steps in metabolism to convert it to useable EPA-like form (and cats totally lack one of the metabolic enzymes to utilize ALA).
Wild sourced Alaskan Salmon oil over Atlantic farmed sources is important because of what the farmed fish are fed. Their diet consists of up to 15% vegetable oil that significantly reduces the Omega 3 content by up to 40%. Please note that all Atlantic salmon is farmed, since North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) prohibits commercial wild salmon fishing throughout the North Atlantic Ocean.
The Omega 3 fatty acids in wild salmon oil have the following health benefits:
– Most complete form of Omega 3 fatty acids
– High levels of EPA & DHA
– Promotes a healthy skin and coat
– Promotes and maintains healthy joints
– Supports a healthy immune system
– Supports healthy brain development in puppies and kittens
– Supports cognitive function & vision
– Supports fertility
