Tips to Help Your Cat Lose Weight
Have you noticed that your little ball of fur is starting to become a big ball of fur? There may be some health risks for your kitty if they slowly start to pack on a few extra pounds, so you need to start limiting their food intake and get them to exercise.
As you probably know, this is easier said than done! Cats are notoriously stubborn and will expect food when they are used to having it. If you start them on a diet cold turkey, your cat could be bothering you in the wee hours of the morning looking for food.
If you want to avoid any problems that your cat will give you while you try to make them go on a diet, check out these tips to make sure they remain happy and healthy for the rest of their life!
Limit the Amount of Food You Give Your Cat
Much like how we as people should count the calories we eat each day to stay healthy, cats need to follow the same protocol to remain at a healthy weight. It’s fairly simple to work out how many calories your cat should be eating a day to start losing weight. If your cat weighs 8kg, just as an example, multiply that by 30 then add 70, then multiply that number by 0.8. The equation looks like this: 8 x 30 + 70 = 310, 310 x 0.8 = 248. This means that your cat should be eating 248 calories a day. If you feed them less, they will start to lose weight! Most cat food companies will have their caloric values on the side of the bag or on their website.
Add a Sense of Accomplishment to Their Meals
Cats are natural predators, let them use their instincts when you feed them! This could include hiding food around your house so they can hunt for it, or there are toys available that dispense food when you cat rolls it around. Get your cat moving while it eats to help them lose weight.
Play with Your Cat
Speaking of getting your cat to move, you should spend at least 10 minutes a day getting your cat to move around and exercise. Breakout the laser pointer or toss around their favourite toy for them to chase around and paw at. Your cat will have fun playing while you have fun watching them run and roll around!
Switch Their Food Up
Most dry foods are only 5% water and are highly dense in calories. On the other hand, the wet food contains around 80% water, which will make your cat feel full without eating any unnecessary calories. If your cat detests wet food, try finding a diet or weight loss cat food brand that they will enjoy. Cats don’t like change, so slowly mix in their new food with their old food until they get accustomed to it.
