How Can I Get My Dog Unconstipated?

Constipation is a common problem in dogs, especially those that are fed a basic kibble diet. Since it can cause lasting bowel issues and chronic pain, it’s important to treat the issue as soon as you notice something is wrong. Keep reading to learn how to spot signs of constipation and what you can do to help make your dog more regular.

How to Tell If Your Dog is Constipated

According to the American Kennel Club, a healthy dog should poop once or twice a day. If your dog poops less than that, he may be constipated.

You might also notice a change in the consistency of your dog’s stools. Hard, dry, round stools are a classic sign of constipation. You may also notice your dog straining to poop when he goes. He might shake while pooping or take longer to finish his business than he usually does.

What You Can Do About It

If you think your dog might be constipated, there are a few things you can give him to help the problem.

  • Pumpkin. Pumpkin is excellent for dogs’ digestion, offering plenty of fibre and moisture to help loosen up their stools. You can give your dog fresh pumpkin if you have it, but canned or powdered pumpkin is also fine. Just make sure that it’s pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling to avoid excess sugar.
  • Fibre supplements. Just like humans, constipated dogs often benefit from fibre supplements. Many pet health brands make dog-safe supplements with natural ingredients like psyllium fibre, so you can feel good about feeding them to your beloved fur kid.
  • Premium wet dog food. Wet dog food contains more moisture than dry kibble and can sometimes help move your dog’s digestion along. Choose a high-quality brand made from fresh, minimally-processed ingredients to ensure your dog gets as much nutrition as possible.
  • Extra water. If you can coax your dog to drink a little more water, some of that water might make it into his stools. Encourage your dog to drink regularly from his dish. If he resists, you can try offering him a little flavored water or bone broth instead.
  • Stool softeners. If none of the other remedies work, you can give your dog commercial stool softeners for a few days and see if that helps. Don’t rely on these to keep your dog regular, though – it’s better to address the underlying issue and help your dog feel better.
