How Can I Keep My Dog Cool During a Summer Heatwave?

If you’re excited to enjoy the summer sun with your beloved dog this season, beware the heat! Just like humans, dogs can quickly become dehydrated or develop heat stroke in very hot weather. In fact, they are much more vulnerable to these conditions than the average person.

You need to do everything you can to keep your fur kids cool while outdoors during a heatwave. Here are 5 tips to help you cool your dog down in severe summer heat.

1. Provide Plenty of Water

There’s nothing like a sip of cold water on a hot day, and that goes for your dog as well. Keep his fluid intake up by setting out a bowl of cool water for him to lap at. If you plan to spend several hours out under the sun, either chill the bowl or replace the water periodically. Even warm water will help with dehydration, though, so don’t worry too much about temperature if you don’t have access to a cold tap or a fridge.

2. Stay in Shaded Areas

Direct sunlight creates intense heat that can quickly overwhelm your dog. Shade from umbrellas, trees, buildings, and other items in the environment help to block some of the sun’s rays and keep heat levels manageable for your furry friend.

3. Give Him Damp Towels or a Cooling Vest

Placing a damp towel or blanket over your dog is one of the best ways to cool him off in a hurry. However, this method may be a bit impractical on long outings and when your dog is on the go. In these cases, a cooling vest can provide a similar effect.

4. Turn the Sprinkler On

If you’re relaxing in the sun at home, you can easily give your dog a little relief from the heat just by turning on your sprinkler system. Your dog will love the cool light mist, and he may enjoy chasing the spray as well.

5. Use Protective Boots

Dogs don’t usually wear shoes, so spending time on asphalt or concrete on a hot day may lead to them quickly overheating or even burning the pads of their feet. Putting protective boots on your dog’s feet will keep his feet safe from the heat that radiates from paved surfaces in the sun.

Keep Your Canine Safe This Summer

Dogs love summertime activities like beach visits, frisbee games, and long walks in the sun; don’t let a heatwave rob yours of his fun. If you take the necessary precautions and remain vigilant while you are out together, it should be easy to keep your dog cool, happy, and healthy even in extremely hot temperatures.
